Add a background image to your page

Make your page stand out guide 4 of 7 Next: Add sub-pages, and decide whether to link to them

A background image lives in your theme: add one photo, show it as a header across the top or a full background behind everything, and tint it so your text stands out. Every page on that theme gets it, and any page can switch it off.

Before you start

  • Your own theme, which is a Pro feature. The image is added to a theme you've already created.
  • A photo you have the rights to, with everyone in it happy to appear, and for anyone under 18, a parent or guardian. A JPEG, PNG or WebP at least 1200 pixels wide looks sharp on a large screen.
  • On a team seat, your team's themes are managed by its owner and admins, in Team HQ under Media › Brand. The steps there are the same.

The steps

  1. Open your theme

On My Pages, under Themes, press the edit button on your theme. Background is below Buttons. Click Add an image and choose your photo. It uploads straight away, and the preview beside the form shows it.

  2. Choose a header or a full background

Under Show it as, pick one. A Header image runs across the top with your text on the theme's own background, so any photo works. Choose its height, whether your picture overlaps the image or sits below it, and whether it fades into the page. A Full background stays still behind everything as people scroll, and it makes the bigger first impression.

  3. Set the focal point

A phone shows a tall slice of your photo and a desktop a wide one. Click the part that must stay in view. The green outline shows what a phone keeps and the dashed outline what a desktop keeps. Left, Centre and Right are shortcuts.

  4. Tint it until it's easy to read

Tint lays a colour over the photo, your theme's background colour unless you choose another. On a full background your text sits right on the photo, so the slider shows you what's safe: red is hard to read and green is fine, measured on your photo. Press Set tint to jump to the lowest safe value, and add a panel behind your content if you'd rather show more of the picture.

The Background section with a full background: the image and its bin, the focal point, and the tint in the green.
  5. Save your theme

Press Save theme. If the tint is still in the red, you're asked first: set it to the safe value, save it as it is, or keep editing. The choice is yours.

  6. Put it on your page

In your page's editor, pick your theme in the Theme row and press Save changes. Every page on that theme now shows the background. To keep one page plain, untick Show this theme's background on that page.

The Theme row with a background theme chosen, and the switch that belongs to this page.
  7. Open it on your phone

Press Open under the preview, then scroll. On a full background the photo stays still while your page moves over it. That's what a visitor sees.

Check it worked

Open your page on your phone and on a computer. The part of the photo that matters is in view on both, and all your text is easy to read as you scroll. A page behind an access code shows the same background on its code screen.

If something's different

I can't add an image

Create the theme first: a new theme can take an image once it has been saved. If you're on a team seat, you can use your team's themes but not build your own, so ask your team's owner or an admin, or move to Pro.

The slider stays red, whatever I do

Your text colour is too close to the tint. Change Text or Bio text in your theme's colours, or the tint colour, so they stand further apart.

My theme's colours changed when I added the image

A theme with a background sets its background, text, bio text and link button colours, so the page reads the same on every page it's used on. Change any of them in the same form.

How do I remove the image?

Click the bin on the image and confirm. It comes off every page using that theme straight away, and your colours stay.

My background has disappeared

A background needs Pro on your own themes, or a team seat on your team's. If that changes, it stops showing and nothing is deleted, so it's back as soon as you are.

Does it change my share cards?

No. Your share cards and QR codes look the same as before.

Why it's worth it

A photo says who you are before anyone reads a word: your shop, your team, your work, in your colours. Set it once on a theme and every page matches, and when the season or the campaign changes, one new photo updates them all.
